Humility is an essential part when in the times of submission to GOD. You cannot have pride while following GOD, even so if you have pride; it will surely decrease overtime as you continuously pressing in towards the will of GOD for your life. It is when you understand that you can do absolute nothing without the LORD, it is where humility starts.
I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. John 15:5
When a man is in pride to think he is something while he is nothing, he is in vain! Below is a verse that may humble you. Well, it humbles me truly! When you learn and accept the awesomeness of GOD (even HIS foolishness is wiser than men), there comes awe and the fear of the LORD!
All nations before him are as nothing; and they are counted to him less than nothing, and vanity. Isaiah 40:17
Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. 1 Corinthians 1:25
Humble yourself, and know that in the beginning Adam was formed out of dust into a human. So are we; as we are humans too.
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Genesis 2:7
And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. 1 Corinthians 15:45
For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. Psalm 103:14
Fear of the LORD is very important, it is because of that we learn to obey GOD. Fear the LORD only for HE can do all things possible!
But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible. Matthew 19:26
The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate. Proverbs 8:13
The reason I have used an image of a child because children gives a an excellent example of humility, purity and many other things. See the verse below about children:
At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:1-4
It is so important that we are to refer to children as an example of humility. It relates to trusting in someone, relying on the one who is in higher authority than the child herself. If someone is not humble and being prideful of themselves, they would trust in their own ways other than relying on others for they think their own ways are the best, as though he need not anyone and better than the others.
Look at a child, her innocence–when a child is holding someone’s hand as that person is walking with her to lead her to somewhere. That child who knows nothing about life, would have that complete faith in him, even though she doesn’t know where she is going but continuously trusting totally that he will never ever harm her and would not take her to a place where there is danger. Can you see that blind faith, innocence, humility and purity of the child in that situation? It is that same blind faith, childlike innocence, childlike humility and childlike purity we are to act towards GOD.
Understand childlike faith this way in a child to a parent, girl to a father perspective–the child puts her trust in her parent completely because she have grown to love and put her trusts in her parent knowing that he, the father would provide her all needs. She follows her parent closely expecting for further instruction, guidance and leadership because the child knows that only her parent can lead because he knows better. The child does not assume his role. When the child is out of the attention of her parent, fear comes in.
When we belong to GOD, we are HIS children and HE is our perfect father, better than any earthly father could be. We should not just call HIM GOD, but also call HIM our father/dad/daddy. It is like when you are HIS child, you completely trust in your heavenly father no matter what. Trusting that you are protected by HIM, loved by HIM, saved by HIM, forgiven by HIM, your position as the child of GOD, trusting that you are not alone in this walk because GOD is with you always, your burdens are all taken care by HIM, HIS guidance and plan in your life that it is not to harm you, trusting HIS words, HIS promises, believing that your prayers being heard, even answered such as praying for healing of your health problems and then believing that you are completely healed by GOD…etc. We must have a complete blind faith towards GOD. I really like a song called “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)” by Hillsong. It talked about trusting in the LORD. Part of the lyric said “Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders“. Trusting GOD no matter what even in the storm; trusting HIM without borders and without limitation is blind faith.
Applying back that situation where the child holds onto the hand of a stranger or a someone, to the perspective of GOD and HIS children–we as HIS children hold onto HIS hands every moment for HIM to guide us, trusting HIM alone that HE would never harm us and rely on HIM to guide us wherever HE lead us to. There is no point to doubt GOD for HE is trustworthy and would not fail you. Humble oneself before GOD is respecting and honoring GOD.
Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter’s clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding? Isaiah 29:16
It is vanity and doesn’t make sense when the clay thinks that it knows more than its potter. It is when we abide in the truth, knowing that we can do nothing without the LORD, that everything comes from GOD, accepting HIM as our LORD and MASTER that would humble us.
And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. Matthew 23:12
Those who are prideful in heart will be humbled in due time.
Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility. Proverbs 18:12
The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. Psalm 14:1
It is wise to be humble and it is pure foolishness to be prideful. Those who are prideful; they think that through boasting themselves will gain admiration from others. This reflected the emptiness within them. But those who are in CHRIST and are humble, they gain all their needs, attention and love from GOD. They have no need to boast to be admired by or have attention from someone, or have selfish attitude to gain something he wants because all his needs can be met through GOD.
So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen. Matthew 20:16
Let humility covers all over you and think others higher than yourself, considering their needs foremost than yours for it is love to have a selfless attitude, willing to serve GOD and others at all times, without complaining and desiring for credits.
It is humbling oneself; willingly lowering one’s position before others for it only concerns for the positions of others, quietly, patiently taking that last position, never wanting the first place by being well hidden in the background, unnoticed, unassuming and even forgotten by others because that person is so lowly; he blends into the surroundings, not wanting to get the main focus from others.
Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Philippians 2:3
Pride is like it always want the first place and the best things, only care about “self” first or even completely about himself and not others. It is all about serving “self”. Pride is a sin, you see… Also, a proud look is an abomination to the LORD.
These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. Proverbs 6:16-19
See these verses below:
But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee. Luke 14:10
Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips. Proverbs 27:2
You see, there is nothing redeeming with pride, but with humility it is not only honorable and wise but also influential to others. Humility is persuasive, because when you humble yourself before others, other than being cold towards others in pride, people would want to come to befriend you for you seem approachable.
Pride is ugly and evil to the core. It only cares about themselves, their selfish gains and completely ignore the needs of others. They even gain happiness through the sufferings of others. It is as though they are being their own god, setting their own imaginary world and concept. Reasoning themselves to suit their own taste and sensual pleasure that is of the flesh. It is the destruction of peace. It hurts people physically and emotionally, it makes people feel sad and rejected. It also puts others off when a person belittle others in pride, boasting himself of his gains, of his wisdom…thinking he is the best person in the world, as though he is self-sufficient and having no need to rely on others for help.
What is the point to have pride while you still can gain admiration, love, attention, all your needs when being humble? While being humble towards GOD is steping towards the right standing with GOD. Having a right standing with GOD is very important so that you are firm in your salvation.
Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. Matthew 10:16
We should not misuse our wisdom to commit evil things and sin against GOD. Rather we are to use our wisdom to do good things, and remain innocent. Not boasting our wisdom and using wisdom for selfish purposes.
A humble person would love to learn more, and they are wise and yet wiser! But the pride thinks he knows all and refrain from learning more, what a fool! The pride is so blinded in their own understanding, thinking that their position is the best as though they are better than others. Their heads are like being stuck in the sand, never looking up in another viewpoint so that they can compare a bigger scene to their small little hole where they insist to dwell in.
But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. James 4:6
Trust in the LORD in all circumstances is humility, other than going in your own way. It is like riding a bike where the LORD is constantly guiding you to places you do not know during the process but all you know that you are going home through HIS direction step by step. HE leads the bike, stomps the wheel to fully direct you while you rest behind on the back sit, trusting HIM alone for all things and that all is well soon (men is not trustable, they fall, make mistakes, see Matthew 15:14 and Jeremiah 17:5), resting in HIS promise of salvation (GOD never breaks HIS promise) and surrender all your burdens to HIM, not worrying anything. Together riding this journey towards the light out of the darkness. You accomplish HIS will through the power of HIS HOLY SPIRIT. A journey of coming home, Heaven is where your true home is!
Humility can also be built up through the love of GOD upon a person; realizing the love GOD have for him and truly experiencing it in a day to day life. GOD’s love can humble a person, change a person and that person could possibly love others more through the love he have from GOD. We are to love others as ourselves. Do to them in which you would want to be treated that way. When you make someone happy, you may feel happy as well because of them. How wonderful is that?
I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. Acts 20:35
GOD is so awesome because HE creates all things. I marvel at HIS humility. HE is LOVE. Love have no pride, it cannot be. When there is love, there is righteousness which strives for peace. When there is humility, there is peace.
All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. John 1:3
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 1 John 4:8
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
GOD is truly our only hope in this world. Only JESUS CHRIST (YAHUSHUA HA MASHIACH) can save us from eternal hell torment because we humans make mistakes, we sin and the price of sin is death (Romans 6:23). Only GOD’s righteous blood bleed for all of humanity can save us, redeem us to eternal life, unto the kingdom of Heaven out of hell, hell was a place which we who have sinned against GOD deserved to go there. But because when we freely accept HIS gift of salvation, put our faith and trust in GOD, knowing that HE had already paid the price on the cross that have the power of emptying out all our debts from the bank. That debt is the price of sin. It is then, through GOD’s blood alone we are saved! You have to know that faith without works is dead. Accepting GOD’s salvation for us is just the beginning, afterwards we have to work on our full repentance, full surrender, relationship with GOD…etc.
What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. James 2:14-26
As mentioned, pride is ugly but humility is very beautiful. When you submit yourself to the will of GOD and always desiring to please GOD, you will surely be humbled in the process because it is due to the humbling of oneself would a person give up their own ways and follow GOD’s ways. Following GOD is a continuous process, just as the yucky pride within you would gradually purged out overtime and resulting a pure heart.
And ye shall keep my statutes, and do them: I am the LORD which sanctify you. Leviticus 20:8
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Matthew 5:8
Humility is very beautiful because it is quick and immediate to forgive others with a smile. It is completely submissive to GOD; willing to obey HIM every moment and only desiring favor from GOD and not from man, not thinking and even worrying of how others think of you. But pride is like it thinks about how others think of him, willing to gain compliments and approvals from others to boost their own ego. Seeking favor from man and not GOD alone.
Being humble is not thinking well of oneself nor thinking oneself better than the others, which is exactly opposite of what pride does. It doesn’t mean you are to be abased. Humility is not judging others (GOD is the only one to judge, HE is the only perfect righteous judge), respecting the feelings of others even when they stumble because you also make mistakes–we all make mistakes; not belittle them thinking you are better than them.
A person who are humble understands that he can do nothing without the LORD; he understands that he must rely on GOD for all his needs, even the deepest needs which GOD can satisfy for the human’s heart. HE alone can satisfy all our needs, those empty longings in our hearts that cannot be satisfied completely from other sources in this world, but only can it be satisfied completely through GOD alone. Through GOD, our needs are met like a permanent fix, while when we seek pleasures such as shopping for stuff that we like to satisfy our yearning, yes, we do quench that thirst for a little while but then later we get thirsty again. We are always wanting more in this fleshy nature, and that thirst is constantly there. Although, GOD alone can satisfy us that constant thirst.
The humble knows that he needs to rely on GOD at all times, through the HOLY SPIRIT and not by himself to strive for righteousness for example. Our own righteousness are as filthy rags.
But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. Isaiah 64:6
The humble serves GOD with delight. They humbly listen to the instructions of GOD and follow it wherever they are lead to. There is peace when a person acts in humility and not pride.
Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 1 Peter 5:6
